Wolves hadn't been seen in the country in two centuries until one was spotted in Jutland five years ago. Since then, there's been concerns that male and female animals would meet and eventually mate, the Copenhagen Post reports.

That now appears to have happened. DNA evidence from faeces has confirmed a female has settled in west Jutland, and CCTV images have shown a pair of wolves moving together in the region.

Speaking to national broadcaster DR, Peter Sunde of Aarhus University said it would only be a matter of time before they mate.

"We expect that they will have cubs this year or the next," he said, pointing out that if it's the former, she's probably in a den tending to young, as wolves tend to breed in spring.

The fact that the pair have been spotted together probably shows that there aren't any pups yet, as the male would instead be hunting on its own, experts say.

Wolves only pair off for one reason, the Berlinsgke newspaper says ominously, and that's to breed. It's thought the female is a recent immigrant from Germany's Schleswig-Holstein region, and travelled a distance of some 550km (340 miles) from its birthplace, the paper reports.

It's possible that more wolves will make the journey north from Germany in the coming years, but an attempt to conduct a census of wolf numbers in 2016 was thwarted by inconclusive evidence.

It's thought there could be as many as 40 wolves in Denmark now, but experts aren't disclosing their locations as they fear public attention could scare the animals away.

The emergence of wolves in Denmark has become a cause for concern for farmers and animal breeders.

In February, there were appeals for action after a string of attacks on sheep in west Jutland were blamed on the predators. Last month six deer were killed at a deer park near a government-approved "wolf zone".

Colorado, like most states, forces convicted criminals to pay court costs, fees, and restitution after they've been found guilty. But the question arises, ''What happens when someone who's been found guilty, has paid their dues, and then has their convictions overturned on appeal? Do they get their money back?'' Not in many states, like Colorado. But all of that has changed after a landmark ruling from the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS).

The state not stealing money from innocent people sounds like common sense, right? Well, unfortunately, in the land of the free, it was necessary for SCOTUS to step in and tell the greedy state that they do not have a right to steal people's money.

According to Forbes, ''defendants, Shannon Nelson and Louis Madden, were convicted for sexual offenses and ordered to pay thousands of dollars in court costs, fees and restitution. Between her conviction and later acquittal, the state withheld $702 from Nelson's inmate account, while Madden paid Colorado $1,977 after his conviction. When their convictions were overturned, Nelson and Madden demanded their money back.''

Colorado refused, even after the plaintiffs won in a state-level appellate court. The state, instead, insisted that if they wanted their money back, they'd have to file a claim under the Exoneration Act, forcing the defendants to once again prove their innocence to retrieve their funds. The plaintiffs appealed all the way to the Supreme Court, who sided with the citizens in a 7-1 ruling, declaring Colorado's law unconstitutional.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the majority opinion for the court declaring ''the Exoneration Act's scheme does not comport with the Fourteenth Amendment's guarantee of due process.''

Ginsburg wrote that Nelson and Madden are ''entitled to be presumed innocent'' and ''should not be saddled with any proof burden'' to reclaim what is already theirs. In other words, they shouldn't have to demonstrate they're not criminals after the court has already made such a determination. According to Forbes:

Ginsburg forcefully rejected Colorado's argument that ''[t]he presumption of innocence applies only at criminal trials,'' and not to civil claims, as under the Exoneration Act: ''Colorado may not presume a person, adjudged guilty of no crime, nonetheless guilty enough for monetary exactions.''

The decision, on its surface, may not seem like much but holds promise for putting an end to the much criticized practice of local law enforcement agencies around the country who engage in civil asset forfeiture. He was detained by Atlanta police withdrawing $200,000 cash from his bank account. He'd planned to take the money and buy his favorite sports car but police were notified and Youngsta was detained as being a possible bank robbery suspect.

Youngsta and his entourage were apprehended while police pointed their weapons at them. The so-called authorities then put everyone in handcuffs, confiscated their personal weapons, and took half of the rapper's $200,000 withdrawal saying he could get it back after it was processed as evidence at police headquarters.

In essence, the police seized his money and forced the rapper to reclaim his own funds after proving he was entitled to it. They robbed him. The police shakedown made international news and smacked in the face of common sense, as many were left scratching their heads and asking how police could get away with doing what common street thugs often do, take other people's money.

Matt Agorist with TFTP reported, from 1998 to 2010, more than 12 billion dollars was raked in from law enforcement at all levels of government. This translated into the government taking away 600 million more dollars than all the robberies and thefts during that same period, making authorities seem more crooked than the individuals they're trying to arrest.

And the practice isn't limited to local law enforcement either. As we previously reported, the ''DEA seized more than $4 billion in cash from people since 2007, but $3.2 billion of the seizures were never connected to any criminal charges. That figure does not even include the seizure of cars and electronics.''

The Inspector General of the Justice Department concluded their practices constituted a threat to everyone's civil liberties, and now, apparently, the SCOTUS agrees. Everyone is entitled to due process under the law and are likewise entitled to keeping their assets once they're found not guilty in criminal court. It's a good day to be an American. Maybe now law enforcement at all levels will stop such controversial practices.

Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are officially engaged.

According to an early morning report from the New York Post's infamous Page 6, Scarborough proposed while the pair were on holiday in France and Monaco to celebrate Brzezinski's 50th birthday.

Per Page 6:

If someone invites you to edit a file in Google Docs today, don't open it '-- it may be spam from a phishing scheme that's been spreading quickly this afternoon. As detailed on Reddit, the attack sends targets an emailed invitation from someone they may know, takes them to a real Google sign-in screen, then asks them to ''continue to Google Docs.'' But this grants permissions to a (malicious) third-party web app that's simply been named ''Google Docs,'' which gives phishers access to your email and address book.

The key difference between this and a very simple email phishing scheme is that this doesn't just take you to a bogus Google page and collect your password '-- something you could detect by checking the page URL. It works within Google's system, but takes advantage of the fact that you can create a non-Google web app with a misleading name. Here's what the permissions screen looks like, for example:

If you've clicked the link, your account may have already sent spam messages to the people in your address book. But you can revoke future access through Google's ''Connected Apps and Sites'' page; where it will appear as ''Google Docs.''

We're still not sure exactly how widespread the attack is, but journalists from several outlets '-- including The Verge '-- have received spam emails.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Google says it's taken measures to stop the spread of the attack and resolve the problem at its core:

We have taken action to protect users against an email impersonating Google Docs, and have disabled offending accounts,'' the company said in a statement. ''We've removed the fake pages, pushed updates through Safe Browsing, and our abuse team is working to prevent this kind of spoofing from happening again. We encourage users to report phishing emails in Gmail.

Update 4:00PM ET, 5/3:We're seeing reports that Googlehas disabledthe application, although we're still not sure exactly how far it's spread, or if the attack might continue through another application.

Update 4:25PM ET, 5/3:Google has also said it is ''investigating'' the issue, warning users not to click on links in the meantime.

It's been a bit of a rough day if you enjoy using the internet. Google Docs experienced a widespread phishing attack, sending the internet into panic. Now WhatsApp has been down for more than an hour, and users of the popular Facebook-owned messaging service have turned to Twitter to vent their frustrations and finish off the panic over the Google Docs attack.

Unfortunately, it looks like WhatsApp gave up providing useful status reports on when its messaging service is down a few years ago. WhatsApp has more than 1 billion users, and it's widely used across the world for group chats and as a replacement for SMS in a number of countries. "WhatsApp is down" reports have been constant worldwide for the past hour, and a WhatsApp spokesperson revealed to Reutersthe company is aware of the outage and is working to fix it.

Update May 3rd, 7:10PM ET:After two hours of outages, service to WhatsApp has been restored.We have updated the headline.

'Wraakvader' Mario H. is vandaag veroordeeld tot 10 maanden onvoorwaardelijke celstraf voor zware mishandeling. H. mishandelde in januari de 46-jarige ex-tbs'er en internetoplichter die met zijn 14-jarige dochter probeerde af te spreken en zich voordeed als een 17-jarige jongen.

Justitie eiste eigenlijk zes jaar tegen H., omdat er volgens hen sprake was van poging tot moord, maar daar is volgens de rechtbank geen sprake van.

Nadat H. erachter was gekomen dat zijn dochter werd opgelicht door S. ging hij zelf op zoek naar de man en vond hem. Hij vond dat de politie te weinig heeft gedaan om hem te helpen.

Wat is er allemaal gebeurd in de tijd voor de mishandeling? Een reconstructie

Op 2 januari krijgt H's dochter een bos rozen en chocolade. De bloemen zouden van haar 17-jarige vriendje zijn die ze via internet had leren kennen, maar de bloemen zijn wel erg duur, vindt H.. Bij de bloemenwinkel komt hij erachter dat de bloemen zijn gekocht door een oude man.

Hij informeert de politie, blijkt uit een reconstructie van Omroep Brabant.

Via een ander slachtoffer krijgt hij beelden van de man, die Jack S. heet, en van zijn auto. Hij zet de foto's op Facebook en dat levert hem honderden tips op. Op 11 januari belt hij met de politie om te zeggen dat hij vindt dat hun zoektocht te lang duurt. De agent waarschuwt hem niet op eigen onderzoek uit te gaan.

Media-aandacht

Een dag later brengt H. de politie twee usb-sticks met informatie over de verblijfplaats van de dader. Het is onduidelijk wat de politie daarmee doet. De zaak heeft inmiddels media-aandacht gekregen.

Een tijd later krijgt hij een tip van een anonieme beller die zegt dat hij de auto van S. in een straat in Eindhoven heeft zien staan. H. gaat het checken en stuurt een WhatsAppje met een waarschuwing naar een agent. Hij blijft in de buurt van de auto wachten.

Arrestatieteam stand-by

De dag erna belt H. met de politie om te zeggen dat hij bij S. in de buurt is. Een arrestatieteam wordt stand-by gezet. S. staat namelijk bekend bij de politie als een harddrugsgebruiker die een wapen kan dragen en zich mogelijk kan verzetten bij een aanhouding.

Een uur later komt S. naar buiten en rijdt hij naar het terrein van de GGzE in Eindhoven. H. volgt hem. Ze hebben oogcontact en H. belt weer de politie. "Als jullie hier niet binnen 5 minuten zijn, dan los ik het zelf op", zegt hij.

De politie treft S. een kwartier later aan met hoofdletsel, snijwonden en een dubbele armbreuk. H. bekent.

Barack Obama's team used NSA technology to examine data gathered on tens of thousands of Americans abroad during the election, it has emerged.

Officials searched both metadata and the actual contents of communications for the names of more than 30,000 US citizens, according to data released by the he Office of the Director of National Intelligence this week.

And more than 3,000 of the resulting intelligence reports were then circulated among government departments without the names of the searched parties being redacted, sources with direct knowledge told Circa.

The data is officially only gathered on non-US-citizens outside America that use US infrastructure such as email servers.

But critics say that the pull of the NSA's system is so strong that it routinely sweeps up data the agency does not legally have access to.

'I think it is alarming. There seems to be a universal trend toward more surveillance and more surveillance that impacts Americans' privacy without obtaining a warrant,' Neema Singh Guliani, the ACLU's legislative counsel, said.

'This data confirms that there is a lack of acknowledgment that information is being specifically and increasingly mined about Americans for investigations that have little or nothing to do with international terrorism.'

In total, officials searched for the names of 30,355 Americans in communications metadata in 2016 - a 27.5 per cent increase on the previous year.

Metadata includes email addresses and phone numbers, but not the content of the actual communications.

But officials also searched the contents of the communications themselves for the names of 5,288 Americans - compared to just 198 in 2013.

Those figures don't include searches by the FBI, which are likely to increase the numbers dramatically.

As a result of the Obama administration's searches, thousands of NSA intelligence reports were created and circulated among government offices that had the names of US residents visible.

Usually those names would be redacted and replaced with 'American No. 1' or something similar.

In around half of those cases the identities were initially redacted, but later 'unmasked' by the Obama administration.

Among those that were unmasked were members of Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign team.

In total 3,134 NSA intelligence reports with unredacted names of US residents were created in 2016; 3,354 were created in 2015.

The increase in searches was the direct result of Obama's 2011 decision to loosen restrictions placed on the sharing of information, government sources told Circa.

One, who did not wish to be named, said: 'It's simply easier for people to make requests.

'And while we have safeguards, there is always concern and vigilance about possible political or prurient motives that go beyond national security concerns.'

Around 20 US officials have the power to unmask a name - something that was once considered a rare act.

The justification need only be that 'the identity of the United States person is necessary to understand foreign intelligence information or assess its importance,' according to a 2011 document related to Obama's easing of intelligence rules.

Officials confirmed that the increase has come as officials became comfortable with the 2011 changes.

Alex Joel, head of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence's Office of Civil Liberties, Privacy, and Transparency, said that the newly released report was a triump of transparency.

'Our goal is to provide relevant information, distilled into an accessible format,' he said.

'This year's report leans forward in that direction, providing significant information beyond what's statutorily required, and reflecting our concerted effort to enhance clarity.'

Hipsters have been blamed for polarizing trends from jeans to facial hair. Now they're making it more expensive to enjoy breakfast.

It's even worse with avocados, where a 22-pound box of Hass avocados from the state of Michoacan, Mexico's biggest producer, now costs more than double what it was a year earlier and is the highest in data going back 19 years.

Cauliflower's rise from vegetable afterthought to darling of the vegan and gluten-free diet has already contributed to a spike in Canada's consumer prices. In the U.S., prices have tripled in a little more than a year, thanks in no small part to trendy recipes like cauliflower rice and cauliflower crust pizza. The vegetable's price has come down from its peak, but is still higher than the historical average.

Vanilla's price rise might be better laid at the feet of corporate America, but hipsters can't be absolved entirely. Starbucks's attempt to tap into the seemingly bottomless appetite for all things unicorn '-- Frappuccino anyone? '-- has sent the cost of the bean within striking distance of a record.

And Starbucks itself is sitting near all-time highs as it profits from these trends. When the company released earnings late last week, it singled out the success of its Unicorn Frappuccino.

If Starbucks is any example, the quick capitalization on these popular trends by major companies isn't going away.

I confess: I can feel hesitancy in myself sometimes re:content warnings because the reward cycle of people responding to me feels less certain if I hide things.

I know that this isn't a good reason, so I still try to use CWs responsibly, but I feel like it's worth acknowledging. I crave attention/validation, and some design patterns may emphasize or de-emphasize those things in ways I still am learning to react to.

I can now query my solar panels via my Alexa Amazon Dot Echo thingie (why so many names?).

I flatter myself as a reasonably competent techie and programmer, but fuck me AWS Lambdas and Alexa skills are a right pile of shite! Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh, but they're a pain in the arse to get anything done.

I wanted something simple. When I say "Solar Panels", call this API, then say this phrase. That's the kind of thing which should take 5 minutes in something like IFTTT. Instead, it took around two hours of following out-of-date official tutorials, and whinging on Twitter, before I got my basic service up and running.

A quick bit of preparatory searching on Alta Vista 2.0 and I'd got incredibly frustrated.

I ended up following this "easy" 30 step guide to develop a basic skill.

It's not so bad, but it does reveal Amazon's contempt for developers. Several of the steps contained errors, it involves multiple logins, random clicks, and a bunch of copy & pasting. Dull and complex.

A frustrating and ultimately unsatisfying experience. I ended up using StackOverflow to correct errors in my code because the documentation was so woefully lacking.

Why not IFTT?So, there is an official If-This-Then-That channel for Alexa.

But like most IFTTT services, it isn't well supported by the company. It works with a few blessed services, but you can't bring in your own APIs, nor define your own responses.

It is barely tested and has all sorts of weird restrictions.

Here's a tip, gang, if your service can't cope with upper-case characters that means it isn't ready to release to the public.

Most Alexa skills require you to have the sort of lifestyle where you are regularly desperate to know what the weather is like at a specific airport. Or have a life which is intimately tied to the range of Amazon-only services.

Taking a look through what developers have released, it's an obvious conclusion that most developers have better things to do that spend time battling with Amazon's inadequate developer experience.

Oh, and there's the requisite "fart apps" and other high quality services;.

The future may be voice interfaces - but Amazon aren't leading the way there.

2017-05-02T06:17-0400 Sean Hannity had a message for the roughly 30 staff members he treated to pizza Tuesday night: I'm not negotiating an exit.

As speculation swirled about Hannity's future at Fox News in the wake of the resignation of his longtime friend and former producer Bill Shine, who was named a co-president of Fox News last summer with the departure of longtime network chief Roger Ailes, Hannity decided to treat his staff to a thank-you party.

Staff-wide meetings for Hannity are unusual and one person close to his show expressed surprise because ''Hannity doesn't do meetings.''

But at the meeting held Tuesday afternoon, the anchor told his staff that he's not negotiating an exit despite reports, according to a person present at the meeting. He thanked his staff for what they do and told them he's "always available" to answer questions.

"And don't believe the destroy-Trump media," the person said he added.

According to multiple sources, Hannity has a "key man clause" in his contract that gives him the option of leaving Fox News at any time after the departure of Ailes; he only needs to give 60 days notice before he can leave the network.

Shine resigned on Monday as the network faces a number of sexual harassment and racial discrimination suits. (Shine is named in some of the lawsuits as someone who was aware of sexual harassment but did not act; he denies wrongdoing.) His resignation follows the ousting of primetime anchor Bill O'Reilly last month and Ailes last year as they faced sexual harassment allegations. Star anchors Megyn Kelly and Greta Van Susteren also left the network in the past year and the network's primetime line up has been completely reworked.

Though Hannity declared last week that Shine leaving the network would be "the total end of the [Fox News Channel] as we know it,'' he indicated in a Monday tweet that he was not yet negotiating an exit.

Hannity teasingly addressed media reporters who were watching his show on Monday night, saying "I may or may not have a thing or two to say before the show is over just for you. Please stay tuned.''

But in the end he did not address Shine's departure at all, saying only, ''All the lies you've heard about me, they're not true."

A Fox News spokesperson declined to comment on the meeting.

In a 'Crocodile Dundee-esque' show of "that's not a nuclear missile... this is a nuclear missile" one-upmanship, US military personnel will test fire the deadly(unarmed) Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile between 12:01 and 6:01 a.m. tonight from the north end of the Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc in California.

Col John Moss, 30th Space Wing commander, will oversee the launch of the long range missile, saying:

"Team V is once again ready to work with Air Force Global Strike Command to successfully launch another Minuteman III missile.

These Minuteman launches are essential to verify the status of our national nuclear force and to demonstrate our national nuclear capabilities.

We are proud of our long history in partnering with the men and women of the 576th Flight Test Squadron to execute these missions for the nation."

Additionally, as The Daily Star reports, after President Trump branded North Korea "a real threat to the world," Col Deane Konowicz, the 625th Strategic Operations Squadron commander, said the test will send a message to enemies of the US...

"The Simulated Electronic Launch of a Minuteman III ICBM is a signal to the American people, our allies, and our adversaries that our ICBM capability is safe, secure, lethal and ready.

''It highlights the ground and airborne command and control elements of an electrically-isolated ICBM, demonstrating that our deployed ICBMs will respond to critical launch commands.''

The apparent hypocrisy of the escalated sabre-rattling is not lost on many, as The LA Times reports, The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, criticized the timing of the launch, citing heightened tension between the U.S. and North Korea.

''When it comes to missile testing, the U.S. is operating with a clear double standard: It views its own tests as justified and useful, while it views the tests of North Korea as threatening and destabilizing,'' foundation president David Krieger said in a statement.

''What is needed is diplomacy rather than military provocations. Threats, whether in the form of tweets, nuclear-capable aircraft carrier groups, or nuclear-capable missile launches, only increase the dangers to us all.''

The Vandenberg test would be the second missile launched from the base this year.

Three Minuteman III missiles were launched in 2016, according to Lt. Col. Jason Turner, 2d Range Operations Squadron commander.

As part of the Department of State's continuous efforts to provide U.S. citizens traveling abroad with information about safety and security events, we are updating the Worldwide Caution with information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions, political violence, and criminal activity against U.S. citizens and interests abroad. This replaces the Worldwide Caution dated September 9, 2016.

As terrorist attacks, political upheaval, and violence often take place without any warning, U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness when traveling. To better prepare for possible emergencies, U.S. citizens are encouraged to read Country Specific Information pages, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts on travel.state.gov before planning a trip.

Travelers are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages and make it easier to locate you in an emergency. The Department uses these security messages to convey information about terrorist threats, security incidents, planned demonstrations, natural disasters, etc. In an emergency, please contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate or call the following numbers: 1-888-407-4747 (toll-free in the United States and Canada) or 1-202-501-4444 from other countries.

U.S. government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Terrorist groups including ISIS, al-Qa'ida, their associates, and those inspired by such organizations, are intent on attacking U.S. citizens wherever they are. Extremists may use conventional or non-conventional weapons to target U.S. government and private interests. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack to more effectively target crowds, including the use of edged weapons, pistols, and vehicles as weapons. Extremists increasingly aim to assault ''soft'' targets, such as:

high-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)hotels, clubs, and restaurantsplaces of worshipschoolsparksshopping malls and marketstourism infrastructurepublic transportation systemsairportsIn multiple regions, terrorists, guerrilla groups, and criminals seek to kidnap U.S. citizens to finance their operations or for political purposes. In the wake of well-publicized attacks against commercial aircraft in Egypt by ISIS and Somalia by al-Shabaab, the Department remains concerned that terrorists could again seek to down aircraft using concealed explosives or hijack commercial flights.

Private U.S. citizens should not travel to any country to participate in armed conflict. U.S. citizens are reminded that fighting on behalf of or providing other forms of support to designated terrorist organizations can constitute the provision of material support for terrorism, which is a serious crime that can result in penalties, including prison time and large fines.

In addition to concerns stemming from terrorism, travelers should be alert to the possibility of political unrest, violence, demonstrations, and criminal activities when traveling. Country-specific information pages and Travel Warnings should be consulted to obtain the latest data on such threats.

Below, we provide information specific to different regions and countries. Please consult travel.state.gov for additional information.

AFRICA : An array of terrorists, guerilla, and insurgent groups are active across Sub-Saharan Africa, and the threat of al-Qa'ida and ISIS-inspired attacks constitutes a growing concern. U.S. citizens remain at risk from car bombings to complex assaults on hotels and tourist sites. In Somalia, terrorists frequently target hotels and the commercial aviation sector has been attacked. WASHINGTON The U.S. National Security Agency collected more than 151 million records of Americans' phone calls last year, even after Congress limited its ability to collect bulk phone records, according to an annual report issued on Tuesday by the top U.S. intelligence officer.

The report from the office of Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats was the first measure of the effects of the 2015 USA Freedom Act, which limited the NSA to collecting phone records and contacts of people U.S. and allied intelligence agencies suspect may have ties to terrorism.

It found that the NSA collected the 151 million records even though it had warrants from the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance court to spy on only 42 terrorism suspects in 2016, in addition to a handful identified the previous year.

The NSA has been gathering a vast quantity of telephone "metadata," records of callers' and recipients' phone numbers and the times and durations of the calls - but not their content - since the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The report came as Congress faced a decision on whether to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which permits the NSA to collect foreign intelligence information on non-U.S. persons outside the United States, and is scheduled to expire at the end of this year.

Privacy advocates have argued that Section 702 permits the NSA to spy on Internet and telephone communications of Americans without warrants from the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, and that foreign intelligence could be used for domestic law enforcement purposes in a way that evades traditional legal requirements.

The report said that on one occasion in 2016, the FBI obtained information about an American in response to a search of Section 702 data intended to produce evidence of a crime not related to foreign intelligence.

The report did not address how frequently the FBI obtained information about Americans while investigating a foreign intelligence matter, however.

On Friday, the NSA said it had stopped a form of surveillance that allowed it to collect the digital communications of Americans who mentioned a foreign intelligence target in their messages without a warrant.

TRUMP'S ALLEGATIONS

The new report also came amid allegations, recently repeated by U.S. President Donald Trump, that former President Barack Obama ordered warrantless surveillance of his communications and that former national security adviser Susan Rice asked the NSA to unmask the names of U.S. persons caught in the surveillance.

Both Republican and Democratic members of the congressional intelligence committees have said that so far they have found no evidence to support either allegation.

Officials on Tuesday argued that the 151 million records collected last year were tiny compared with the number collected under procedures that were stopped after former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed the surveillance program in 2013.

Because the 151 million would include multiple calls made to or from the same phone numbers, the number of people whose records were collected also would be much smaller, the officials said. They said they had no breakdown of how many individuals' phone records were among those collected.

In all, according to the report, U.S. officials unmasked the names of fewer Americans in NSA eavesdropping reports in 2016 than they did the previous year, the top U.S. intelligence officer reported on Tuesday.

The report said the names of 1,934 "U.S. persons" were "unmasked" last year in response to specific requests, compared with 2,232 in 2015, but it did not identify who requested the names or on what grounds.

Officials said in the report that U.S. intelligence agencies had gone out of their way to make public more information about U.S. electronic eavesdropping.

"This year's report continues our trajectory toward greater transparency, providing additional statistics beyond what is required by law," said Office of the Director of National Intelligence spokesman Timothy Barrett.

F or two years I was charged with turning Facebook data into money, by any legal means. If you browse the internet or buy items in physical stores, and then see ads related to those purchases on Facebook, blame me. I helped create the first versions of that, way back in 2012.

The ethics of Facebook's micro-targeted advertising was thrust into the spotlight this week by a report out of Australia. The article, based on a leaked presentation, said that Facebook was able to identify teenagers at their most vulnerable, including when they feel ''insecure'', ''worthless'', ''defeated'' and ''stressed''.

Facebook claimed the report was misleading, assuring the public that the company does not ''offer tools to target people based on their emotional state''. If the intention of Facebook's public relations spin is to give the impression that such targeting is not even possible on their platform, I'm here to tell you I believe they're lying through their teeth.

Wiretaps, data dumps and zero days: is digital privacy no longer possible?Just as Mark Zuckerberg was being disingenuous (to put it mildly) when, in the wake of Donald Trump's unexpected victory, he expressed doubt that Facebook could have flipped the presidential election.

Facebook deploys a political advertising sales team, specialized by political party, and charged with convincing deep-pocketed politicians that they do have the kind of influence needed to alter the outcome of elections.

I was at Facebook in 2012, during the previous presidential race. The fact that Facebook could easily throw the election by selectively showing a Get Out the Vote reminder in certain counties of a swing state, for example, was a running joke.

Converting Facebook data into money is harder than it sounds, mostly because the vast bulk of your user data is worthless. Turns out your blotto-drunk party pics and flirty co-worker messages have no commercial value whatsoever.

But occasionally, if used very cleverly, with lots of machine-learning iteration and systematic trial-and-error, the canny marketer can find just the right admixture of age, geography, time of day, and music or film tastes that demarcate a demographic winner of an audience. The ''clickthrough rate'', to use the advertiser's parlance, doesn't lie.

Without seeing the leaked documents, which were reportedly based around a pitch Facebook made to a bank, it is impossible to know precisely what the platform was offering advertisers. There's nothing in the trade I know of that targets ads at emotions. But Facebook has and does offer ''psychometric''-type targeting, where the goal is to define a subset of the marketing audience that an advertiser thinks is particularly susceptible to their message.

And knowing the Facebook sales playbook, I cannot imagine the company would have concocted such a pitch about teenage emotions without the final hook: ''and this is how you execute this on the Facebook ads platform''. Why else would they be making the pitch?

The question is not whether this can be done. It is whether Facebook should apply a moral filter to these decisions. Let's assume Facebook does target ads at depressed teens. My reaction? So what. Sometimes data behaves unethically.

I'll illustrate with an anecdote from my Facebook days. Someone on the data science team had cooked up a new tool that recommended Facebook Pages users should like. And what did this tool start spitting out? Every ethnic stereotype you can imagine. We killed the tool when it recommended then president Obama if a user had ''liked'' rapper Jay Z. While that was a statistical fact '' people who liked Jay Z were more likely to like Obama '' it was one of the statistical truths Facebook couldn't be seen espousing.

I disagreed. Jay Z is a millionaire music tycoon, so what if we associate him with the president? In our current world, there's a long list of Truths That Cannot Be Stated Publicly, even though there's plenty of data suggesting their correctness, and this was one of them.

African Americans living in postal codes with depressed incomes likely do respond disproportionately to ads for usurious ''payday'' loans. Hispanics between the ages of 18 and 25 probably do engage with ads singing the charms and advantages of military service.

Why should those examples of targeting be viewed as any less ethical than, say, ads selling $100 Lululemon yoga pants targeting thirtysomething women in affluent postal codes like San Francisco's Marina district?

The hard reality is that Facebook will never try to limit such use of their data unless the public uproar reaches such a crescendo as to be un-mutable. Which is what happened with Trump and the ''fake news'' accusation: even the implacable Zuck had to give in and introduce some anti-fake news technology. But they'll slip that trap as soon as they can. And why shouldn't they? At least in the case of ads, the data and the clickthrough rates are on their side.

Italian investigators believe that a number of Islamic State fighters from Libya have slipped into Europe by infiltrating a scheme designed to give hospital treatment to wounded regular Libyan government soldiers.

A Italian intelligence document seen by the Guardian reveals a complex network in which, from 2015, members of Isis and others linked to jihadi movements have infiltrated Europe pretending to be injured, so as to be treated in clinics and then freed to move elsewhere in Europe and the Middle East.

''Elements of Isis are involved in the smuggling of the wounded men from Libya and are using this strategy to travel out of Libya with false passports,'' the document says.

The Italian intelligence document focuses on a western-backed health project for the rehabilitation and care of injured Libyans, saying it is being run in ''a doubtful and ambiguous way'', even though it is overseen by the UN-recognised government of national accord based in Tripoli. It suggests the Libyan government has been unwittingly paying the travel expenses of Isis members, confusing them with legitimate fighters.

Diplomats and health sector managers have been using a scheme called the Comitato Assistenza Feriti Libici (Centre for the Support of Injured Libyans) to apply for special visas to take wounded soldiers for treatment in Europe.

But Italian intelligence believes an unknown number of Isis fighters have infiltrated the scheme using false passports supplied to them by a criminal network, including corrupt officials. It says it discovered in early 2016 that Isis had seized control of the passport office in Sirte and stolen as many as 2,000 blank documents.

The French government has already claimed in public that Isis has developed a sophisticated capacity to manufacture as many as 200 false passports.

The Italianintelligence document states: ''Since 15 December 2015, an unknown number of wounded fighters of the Islamic State in Libya have been transported out of the country to an Istanbul hospital to undergo medical treatment.''

The bulk of the ''false wounded'' come from the Libyan area of Fataeh, where ''elements of the Islamic State would be holed up'', the document states.

From there, the fighters are most commonly sent to Turkish hospitals. It claims in one case the fighters showed fake passports to doctors in Misrata and told them they were wounded in Sirte and Benghazi.

''The Isis fighters'' '' the intelligence document says '' ''would present false passports and, posing as members of the Majlis Shura Thuwar Benghazi (MSTB) report to medical personnel in Misrata''.

''Misrata is in fact the headquarters of the smuggling of these men from Libya to other countries. Misrata is also the place where the trafficking of false passports takes place when a fake identity is needed to cover the real identity of these men.''

The allegations underline the difficulties authorities in Libya and Europe face in determining the motives of militiamen fighting in Libya, and the extent to which their Islamist sympathies extend to support for Isis.

The main countries identified in the document are Turkey, Romania, Serbia and Bosnia, but the injured appear to have also stayed in France, Germany and Switzerland.

An Italian doctor named in the report, Rodolfo Bucci, confirmed to the Guardian he had been contacted by an individual identified in it as part of the smuggling network. ''I was contacted by some men to coordinate these medical treatments because I'm a specialist in Europe in pain treatment therapy. But then I don't know what happened. I don't know if the programme was stopped,'' he said.

The Italian intelligence document describes the position of the government of Tripoli as ''highly ambivalent'' because, although it does not pay for medical care for Isis fighters, it ''officially facilitates the exit from Libyan territory of elements traced to MSTB, a group in which jihadist militiamen, linked to Daesh [Isis], are directly involved''.

Photograph: Hani Amara/ReutersIn some cases, the intelligence report states, the documents apparently prepared by hospitals arranging for Libyans to leave the country give only superficially described details of injuries or are totally bereft of any details.

Petter Nesser, a senior researcher at the FFI terrorism research group in Norway, said European intelligence agencies were increasingly concerned about Isis fighters from Libya.

''There was a feeling that we would have seen more combatants coming out from Libya and it has taken a while until this materialised. Most of the plots in Europe were linked to Syria. But quite recently we are starting to see more plots in Europe linked to Libya.

''We know that Daesh is coordinating the infiltration of more operatives and combatants from Libya. The Berlin attacker had ties to Libyan operatives and even Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the Paris attacks ringleader, had ties with Isis agents in Libya.''

The Italian intelligence documents are largely based on the exchange of information from the Italian civil and military police, as well as the FBI. The investigation has been passed to antiterrorism police in Italy.

The Italian interior ministry has been contacted for comment.

A leaked document from Facebook's Australia office, marked confidential and authored by two Australian Facebook executives, purported to show potential advertisers how to target to teens as young as 14 when they were feeling both good and confident, and targeting "moments when young people need a confidence boost." The document was first reported on by The Australian newspaper, and Consumerist notes that "The document apparently outlines an array of teenagers' emotional states that the company claims it can target based on how kids are using the service, including, 'anxious,' 'defeated,' 'insecure,' 'overwhelmed,' 'stressed,' and 'worthless,' among other negative emotions." Reportedly, the document was part of a pitch being prepared for a major Australian bank, and was dated in 2017.

The document was apparently geared toward helping advertisers to pinpoint the best moments to target teens and young adults in the workforce in Australia and New Zealand, also noting, as Ars Technica reports, that "earlier in the week, teens post more about 'anticipatory emotions' and 'building confidence,' while weekend teen posts contain more 'reflective emotions' and 'achievement broadcasting.'

As CNet reports, Facebook is an "advertisers' goldmine" with some 5 million companies vying to get their products into our news feeds each month. But Facebook's own policies (as well as Australian advertising law, per Mashable) prohibit the use of its somewhat controversial research into users' emotional states for the purpose of advertising. This was laid out in a protocol that the company finalized just last year following earlier dustups over the ethics of the research generally.

Facebook has issued a statement saying "This research did not follow [our established] process, and we are reviewing the details to correct the oversight.'' The company also says, "Facebook does not offer tools to target people based on their emotional state. The analysis done by an Australian researcher was intended to help marketers understand how people express themselves on Facebook." And, assuring us that no one's privacy was violates, they say, "[The research] was never used to target ads and was based on data that was anonymous and aggregated."

There has been some anecdotal suggestion in recent years that teens, at least in the US, were fleeing Facebook in droves in favor of other social media platforms not inhabited by their parents, but research has not shown that to be the case. As of early 2015, the Pew Research Center found that 71 percent of teens still reported using Facebook regularly, with Instagram and Snapchat usage coming in second and third, respectively. And a new survey published in January of 2017 suggested that teens' Facebook usage has only risen over the past several years '-- though their percent figures are lower, showing 65 percent using the platform as of November 2016.

On Thursday, The New York Times labeled salad racist.

That's right, salad.

In an opinion piece titled Why Is Asian Salad Still On The Menu? by Bonnie Tsui, it is argued that the Asian Salad reeks of cultural appropriation by racist Westerners who often use offensive puns and stereotypes to name such Americanized cuisine while fetishizing Asian culture.

Tsui's anti-salad rant was triggered by the "Asian Emperor Salad" listed on a menu at a San Francisco joint she was dining at last Friday.

"I tried to identify exactly what that was," wrote Tsui. "I made a halfhearted joke to my husband about just which Asian emperor this salad was honoring. I thought about its grand imprecision, which irritated me as a Chinese-American. And I wondered, 'Who cooked up this thing?'"

Not Asians, apparently, and that's racist.

"When the Asian salad fad exploded, something that was cooked up by non-Asians became, well, 'Asian' in the popular imagination. A single Cheesecake Factory, Rainforest Cafe or Applebee's could sell 500 Asian salads a week," complains the NYT columnist.

Then things get real: Tsui is upset that the $12 "Oriental chicken salad" at a restaurant chain isn't made with authentic Asian ingredients:

So what's my problem with Asian salad? It's not the salad itself, though it's not my favorite. It's the words '-- which, I think, matter. In many ways, the broad, generic terminology used to refer to an entire continent is the heart of it. Applebee's menu features an ''Oriental chicken salad'' with the following description: ''fresh Asian greens tossed in a tasty Oriental vinaigrette.'' The ''Asian greens'' and ''Oriental vinaigrette'' are so laughably vague as to have no meaning at all. When I asked Applebee's for more specifics on what made its Asian greens Asian and its Oriental vinaigrette Oriental, a spokesman told me the company was unable to ''provide a thorough response.'' No kidding.

Oddly, Tsui acknowledges that this sort of Americanized fusion happens with other cultures' food too, but suggests that it's somehow more important or worse with Asian culture:

While the Greek salad has some integrity '-- by this I mean that in Greece you will actually find a salad that looks like this '-- and the Caesar is a creation attributed to the 1920's-era restaurateur Caesar Cardini, the Asian salad stands apart as a strange kind of fiction.

Interesting.

"Am I taking this too seriously?" she asks.

YES!

But there is no reflection upon the rhetorical question; Tsui simply doubles-down on the sensitivity.

"The casual racism of the Asian salad stems from the idea of the exotic '-- who is and isn't American is caught up wholesale in its creation," she writes. "This use of 'Oriental' and 'Asian' is rooted in the wide-ranging, 'all look same' stereotypes of Asian culture that most people don't really perceive as being racist. It creates a kind of blind spot."

In closing, Tsui says her main beef with Asian salad is the name, which belongs to the continent of Asia, not Westerners.

I find something bittersweet in this nostalgia for a fake fusion cuisine. Something created in the name of Asians by non-Asians has become a touchstone for non-Asians. I understand that it's possible to feel fondness for a dish that is deeply inauthentic and I don't resent that one bit. It has become its own thing. Just don't call it Mr. Mao's Chicken Surprise.

Other ridiculous things deemed "racist" by the Left: avoiding eye contact, objective truth, expecting people to show up on time, Victoria's Secret, milk, grammar, and probably breathing.

In sum, everything is racist.

Billionaire investor and liberal donor George Soros is the subject of many discredited right-wing conspiracy theories'--so many that debunking site Snopes.com has an entire wing of Soros articles. He was pictured prominently alongside two other Jewish finance figures (Janet Yellen and Lloyd Blankfein) in a eyebrow-raising Trump campaign ad about the "global special interests" who have "robbed our working class" and "stripped our country of its wealth." He's been the subject of numerous conspiratorial tweets by Trump associates, ranging from White House social media director Dan Scavino to onetime 2016 campaign operative Roger Stone to Nazi-affiliated national security goon Sebastian Gorka to chief of staff Reince Priebus to Trump scion Donald Trump Jr.

(See here for more information about that wildly misleading claim.)

Soros is, in particular, widely blamed on the right for having allegedly paid anti-Trump protesters to fill marches and town halls since inauguration'--a theory the president himself has tweeted about, though he didn't use Soros' name. And while there is, to put it midlly, not a significant amount of evidence that anti-Trump protesters are paid for their time by "globalist" bankers, it does turn out that one thing that George Soros has definitely bankrolled is a company founded by Trump's son-in-law and top adviser Jared Kushner. From the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Kushner co-founded Cadre in 2014 with his brother Joshua and Ryan Williams, a 29-year-old friend and former employee of Kushner Cos., the family-controlled business that Mr. Kushner ran until recently. Cadre markets properties to prospective investors, who can put their money into specific buildings or into an investment fund run by Cadre, which collects fees on each deal.

To get off the ground, Cadre turned to a Goldman Sachs fund and a number of high-profile investors ... Cadre also secured a $250 million line of credit from the family office of George Soros, a top Democratic donor whom Mr. Trump criticized during his presidential campaign, the people close to the company said. Mr. Soros's family office is also an investor in Cadre.

So, from Soros' perspective, America will either be made great again by his business partners in the Trump administration, enriching him in the process, or it will be destroyed in a gratifying orgy of violence initiated by his paid street thugs. It's a win-win situation!

America? liberals?) overrates the certainty of climate science. Stephens concedes that the reality of global warming is ''indisputable, as is the human influence on that warming, [while] much else that passes as accepted fact is really a matter of probabilities.'' He is completely right that the level of future warming is a matter of probabilities, and he is also right that the political debate treats that level of warming as far more knowable than it actually is. Where he's wrong '-- catastrophically so '-- is in his implicit argument that the risk lies entirely on one side.

Greenhouse gases have been proven to trap atmospheric heat, so the basic fact that carbon dioxide increases global temperatures is not a matter of debate. Calculating the exact relationship between a given level of greenhouse-gas emissions and average global temperature is a question laced with some uncertainty. Scientists have devoted enormous resources to modeling this. The consensus reports on climate change use the most likely scenarios as the basis for action. Much of the coverage of climate change in the mainstream media focuses on those likely scenarios.

Stephens is correct that, because scientists have calculated these likely scenarios, they have taken on an air of certainty among some nonscientists. The trouble is that he proceeds to imply that the risk lies in the possibility that scientists are overrating the importance of greenhouse-gas emissions. ''Demanding abrupt and expensive changes in public policy raises fair questions about ideological intentions,'' he argues. ''Censoriously asserting one's moral superiority and treating skeptics as imbeciles and deplorables wins few converts.'' Policy changes can only be called ''abrupt and expensive'' if we think climate change may turn out to be less severe than expected.

But the uncertainty of climate modeling runs in both directions. Climate Shock, a 2015 book by two economists, Gernot Wagner and Martin Weitzman, argues that the ''likely'' global-warming scenario gets too much attention. What should really concern policy makers, they suggest, is the chance that scientists are underrating temperature change. The likely outcomes, represented by the thick part of the curve, are extremely dangerous and expensive levels of climate change. But the truly frightening scenarios lie on the right edge of the curve:

Graph from page 53 of Climate Shock. There is, they reckon, about a 10 percent chance of a temperature increase exceeding 6 degrees Celsius, or 11 degrees Fahrenheit. That would be a civilizational catastrophe, orders of magnitude more dangerous than the likely warming scenarios, and potentially on a scale that could threaten human life. Even if the likely scenarios were completely harmless, the far-right tail alone is horrific enough to justify significant steps. After all, they argue, people do not accept a 10 percent likelihood of a fatal car crash or terrorist attack. Wagner and Weitzman are economists well versed in climate science who bolster their case with a rigorous analysis of both science and probability.

Stephens's column does not engage seriously with either climate science or distributional probability. He uses most of his limited column space to argue anecdotally. That is an approach that makes sense if your highest priority is limited government, and you are attempting to reason backward through the data in a way that makes sense of a policy allowing unlimited dumping of greenhouse-gas emissions into the atmosphere. That is a tic of American conservative-movement thought '-- the conclusion (small government) is fixed, and the reasoning is tailored to justify the outcome. Nearly all conservatives argue this way, and if the Times is going to have conservative columnists '-- which, in my opinion, it should '-- they're going to engage in this kind of sophistry.

Stephens warns, ''[H]istory is littered with the human wreckage of scientific errors married to political power.'' It is sad and dangerous that the cost of too-rapid adaptation of green-energy technologies is the only ''human wreckage'' Stephens seems capable of imagining.

Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts was aghast on Tuesday that the Trump administration was supposedly ''appearing to target both the former administration'' by ''taking steps to roll back Michelle Obama's healthy food initiative for kids.'' The on-screen headline during the ABC report blared: ''White House Scales Back School Lunch Guidelines; Is Trump Targeting Michelle Obama's Legacy?''

Correspondent Cecilia Vega explained: ''Yeah, Robin, this is coming from the new Agriculture Secretary, Sonny Perdue. He says that students essentially aren't eating the food, they don't like it. Cafeterias and schools have complained about it. So, hence, these changes.'' She noted the modest changes to the onerous regulations: ''They would relax whole grain requirements. They allow 1% fat flavored milk back into school cafeterias. And then they relax these sodium limits...''

Comedy gets dark quickly on late night television lately, when you have a president that is so detested by the media. Last night on NBC's Late Night, host Seth Meyers and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow ''joked'' that President Trump was just like fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter, from the book and movie Silence of the Lambs. The pair laughed that Trump secretly wanted to ''kill'' the media, while lapping up the attention they gave him.

After CBS Late Show host Stephan Colbert launched into and vicious and vulgar tantrum against President Trump Monday night, the broadcast networks were initially silent on the controversy swirling around the left-wing comedian. However, that silence was broken Wednesday morning when NBC's Today actually provided a full report on the backlash against the ''crude'' tirade.

Correspondent Stephanie Gosk began the segment by declaring: ''It was the late night joke that left audiences shocked.'' A soundbite followed of Colbert's nasty attack on the President: ''You talk like a sign language gorilla who got hit in the head. In fact, the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin's [bleep] holster.'' Gosk explained: ''Stephen Colbert used a crude phrase while attacking President Trump during a 12-minute monologue Monday night. The comments received instant backlash online. The #FireColbert trending worldwide.''

See if this makes any sense to you. America votes for a black man to be president for two election cycles in a row. Along comes a former first lady and senator, rife with scandals and baggage, who fails to win two presidential election cycles in a row (and just happens to be white.) To the radical liberals on ABC's The View, apparently that means she lost due to ''racist'' backlash against the black president who won two elections already. What?

FBI Director James Comey went before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday where is was grilled by partisan Democrats about his supposed influence in Hillary Clinton's defeat. Of the Big Three Networks ABC appeared to be the most irate over Comey's sworn testimony. ''Comey, animated in his answers, facing questions about whether his decision just 11 days before the election affected the outcome,'' announced Anchor David Muir at the start World News Tonight.

''And he was pressed: Why didn't he reveal the investigation into Donald Trump's associates and Russia, but did go public when it came to Hillary Clinton,'' Muir continued before handing the story over to Senior Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas, who took shot after shot at the FBI Director.

Thomas started off his report by playing a clip of him from January 10 badgering Comey, asking: ''Director Comey, were you comfortable with the role you played in the investigation?'' He also opened by chiding that Comey had been ''under the microscope since the election'' and that he was once again ''in the hot seat.''

President Donald Trump said he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un amid heightened tensions over his country's nuclear weapons program if the circumstances were right.

''If it would be appropriate for me to meet with him, I would absolutely, I would be honored to do it,'' Trump said Monday in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg News. ''If it's under the, again, under the right circumstances. But I would do that.''

The U.S. has no diplomatic relations with North Korea, and as recently as last week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said at the United Nations that the U.S. would negotiate with Kim's regime only if it made credible steps toward giving up its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

''Most political people would never say that,'' Trump said of his willingness to meet with the reclusive Kim, ''but I'm telling you under the right circumstances I would meet with him. We have breaking news.''

North Korea has become the most urgent national security threat and foreign policy issue facing Trump as his first 100 days in office passed. Kim's regime has continued development of its nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile program in defiance of international condemnation and sanctions. Military analysts have said North Korea is on course to develop a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile that could reach the U.S. mainland as soon as 2020, during Trump's term in office.

Kim has never met with a foreign leader since taking charge after his father's death in 2011 and hasn't left his isolated country.

Over more than two decades, six-nation talks, direct bilateral negotiations, food aid and UN sanctions have all failed to deter the Kim dynasty's quest for a nuclear arsenal. That has left the Trump administration relying increasingly on China, North Korea's neighbor and top trading partner, to exert pressure on the regime.

Tensions have escalated since Trump vowed in January that he wouldn't let North Korea develop a nuclear weapon capable of reaching the U.S., and North Korea has labeled American military moves in the region as acts of ''intimidation and blackmail.'' North Korea has continued to test missiles this year after carrying out its fourth and fifth nuclear tests in a decade last year.

While dispatching an aircraft carrier group and a submarine to the region, the Trump administration has emphasized the use of economic sanctions and diplomacy to persuade North Korea to curtail its nuclear program. Trump has said he's encouraged by Chinese President Xi Jinping's efforts to defuse the situation. Trump and Xi met last month at the U.S. president's private club in Florida and have talked several times since.

Then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was the last top U.S. official to meet with a North Korean leader. She discussed the country's nuclear program with Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, in 2000. At the time, she was the most senior official to visit the Stalinist state in the 50 years since the Korean War.

The John Brown Gun Club generated a bit of interest when they had an open carry protest in Phoenix calculated to show the alt-right that the anarcho-communist left was capable of exercising their right to armed self-defense.

They said they were ''ready to rumble'' with their opposite numbers on the far right, and in recent video, drove into the Arizona desert and filmed a ''range day'' event that miraculously didn't end in serious injury or death.

Watch it for yourself, though I'd warn you that it's much better muted so that you don't have to hear their awful music.

First, whoever selected a rock-strown hill as a suitable backstop, especially when they have easy access to one of the nicest public ranges in the world, is a complete moron. Perhaps the PJBGC chose to add their horrible musical accompaniment to cover this video to cover the sound of ricochets.

One of the very first things I notice about the video was how close the members of the PJBGC stood to engage their targets. While it's not uncommon to use carbines to engage targets at 7 yards in carbine classes, that distance is typically chosen to work on very specific skills exploring such topics as mechanical offset, transition drills, recoil management in Bill drills, etc.

That's not what we're seeing here. We're seeing slow, deliberate, aimed fire with rifles against stationary targets mere feet away.

Perhaps the most amusing part of the video is their bizarre attempt to replicate a Colonial-era firing formation.

The formation itself is utterly absurd with modern weapons, and the group merely poses a huge, compressed target. If they were dumb enough to actually form ranks like this in a combat situation, we'd see someone go Benjamin Martin on them and end the entire group in less than a minute.

At the 2:04 mark before these modern day Redcoats opened fire, you can hear their nominal commander order them to take their weapons off safe. There's then a jump-cut, as they apparently had to show this militia how to to manipulate the safeties on their weapons.

The video was heavily edited, and all the jump cuts while people were on the firing line strongly suggests to me that they were cognizant of numerous malfunctions and safety violations, and tried to remove as many as possible before they put what they could of the ''range day'' online.

What they apparently didn't know enough to edit out was the disturbingly consistent pattern of:

engage targetlower the weapon to point at/near the shooter's foot with the finger on the triggertake the finger off the triggerengage the safetyThere were a number of jump cuts as shooters came off target and began lowering their weapon, suggesting that their behavior was either dangerous (turning with the muzzle pointed at their comrades, failing to engage safeties, etc) or showed them to be poorly educated/trained (problems with basic weapon manipulation).

Of course, the alt-right doesn't have any room to talk. I've seen their tactical cosplay as well, and most of it isn't any better.
